Kitchen Designs

Over the last century kitchen designs have changed from dark and dingy workrooms to the sleek 'fashion statements' they are, in some cases, today.

In fact, in the days before electricity and running water, kitchens did not exist as special rooms. Rather a hearth was used for cooking, and a table used initially for food preparation and then as a place for eating meals. It was only at the beginning of the 20th century that the kitchen be came 'a room' within a home (certainly not at places of business).

Advancement in technology and the innovation of appliances went some way to creating a need for kitchens with more storage space and usable benchtops. Although architects and builders designed and installed the early kitchens, it was in the 1970s and 1980s that 'kitchen designers' and 'kitchen manufacturers' evolved.

The use of laminates in a variety of colours changed the look of the kitchen in many homes. Kitchen renovations saw the old 'masonite' cupboards removed, to be replaced by faux timber doors and bright orange, green and yellow benchtops.

Although we may cringe at the sight of these now kitsch kitchens, they are examples of the importance of kitchen designs and colour choices.

Kitchen Designs For Now

Just as our cultural habits have evolved, with kitchens often becoming the centre of the home, so too have kitchen designs grown up. Kitchens now see young families gathering for after-school 'downloads', homework and snacks, while the adults prepare the evening meal.

Entertaining now also includes the kitchen, with guests being invited to chat and enjoy aperitifs while dinner is being assembled.

Flexible kitchen designs now also take into account changing family dynamics and kitchens in corporate environments. Dishwashers mean more mugs, glasses, plates and cutlery are now required (one set in the dishwasher, another ready for use!), and this in turn means that more storage for these items is needed.

Appliances like coffee makers, blenders and toasters all need to be housed, and the designers at Apollo Kitchens ensure that adequate room for these is included in their kitchen designs.

Suit Yourself

The kitchen layout that is right for your lifestyle and that of your family, or for your workplace, will be dictated by many factors, including:

  • The age and any special requirements of its users
  • The size of the room available
  • The need for large appliances - especially for big families or corporate kitchens

Traditionally kitchen designs had at their core a triangle concept, focusing on easy movement between the sink, stove and refrigerator. This model has changed dramatically - consider of the importance of the dishwasher, coffeemaker and microwave oven in our society!
