Choosing the Best Materials for a Germ-free Kitchen
Good kitchen hygiene is essential for health and safety at all times, not just in a pandemic. Your kitchen is the place you entertain and share special moments, and with that comes with the easy spread of germs, mess, and uncleanliness. Adapting your kitchen design to include the right materials can mean easier surfaces to clean and less room for germs to live. Here’s how to ensure the heart of your home is kept germ-free with antibacterial kitchen design and clean kitchen ideas.
Quartz
Quartz is one of the most hygienic surfaces on the market. Made from natural materials that are bound together by resin, the product is non-porous and won’t allow any bacteria to seep into its surface. Quartz is a decadent kitchen material and very easy to maintain with soap, water, and a clean soft cloth.
Laminate
Laminate countertops are made to be durable and allow you to achieve a high-class, quality look without breaking the bank. Like quartz, laminate is non-porous, eliminating any germs that may hang around in the kitchen. If you’re going for laminate, be wary of its seams. When seams open up and create swells on the surface, this can allow areas for bacteria to grow under the surface.
Marble and Granite
Like quartz, marble and granite are hard surface materials and are often sealed to prevent the entry of harmful mould, fungus, and germs. Sealing the material creates a glossy, easy to wipe surface which you can ensure remains germ-free.
Anything without a grout
Grouts are not only unappealing on the eye when filled with dirt (think in between tiles), they’re also the most common areas that germs like to breed. Even after cleaning the grout with expensive products, it’s hard to eradicate every particle of bacteria when they have room to fall beneath the cracks, literally.
Stainless steel and other metals
Stainless steel is an ultra-modern and industrial kitchen surface making its way into new kitchen designs. This material is often seen in commercial kitchens for a reason. Stainless steel is heat-resistant, hygienic in every way and has long-term value, therefore making it the ideal kitchen material.
Cabinets without pores
Ensure that your kitchen cabinets don’t have deep sockets or room to store unwanted bacteria. This is often a common downside to wooden cabinets and exposed walls as they can easily capture dirt and germs making the perfect breeding space for mould and bacteria to grow.
Glass
Hygiene in kitchens is essential for a happy home and healthy living. Easy to clean and to see dirt on its surface, glass is another hygienic kitchen material. Glass also attracts light which can aid in killing off live germs from kitchen surfaces.
