How to Make The Most of Custom Joinery in Your Home
When moving into a new home, storage can either be one of the main selling points, or something that is overlooked.
If your house is lacking in the storage department, a kitchen renovation can be a great excuse to update joinery in other areas of the home.
Read on for our list of ways to maximise and customise storage to suit your needs.
Consider your family’s needs
When designing a new kitchen, it’s easy to get carried away dreaming of floor-to-ceiling cabinetry with fancy handles and heavy doors. If you have young children who like to join in cooking at dinner time, this isn’t always the most user-friendly kitchen design. Think about easy-to-reach drawers and cabinets with push-to-open doors to maximise your little ones’ involvement in the kitchen.
If you’re updating bathroom joinery, bear the same things in mind. Allow plenty of low storage space for towels and bath toys.
Fill every gap
There’s really no such thing as empty space when you can fit it with joinery. That being said, just because you have the room, does not mean your kitchen joinery should be full of huge cupboards. Purpose-building compartments for appliances like your microwave, or fitting shallow shelves in your pantry is a great way to ensure ease in the kitchen.
This island bench makes the most of its depth with hidden cupboards on both sides. Outer cupboards are convenient for storing less frequently used appliances like slow cookers.
Don’t forget the bathroom
The bathroom can often be the most neglected room in the house when it comes to storage. Space for clean towels, cleaning supplies and spare toilet rolls reserved in the linen press is no use when it’s nowhere near the bathroom.
Although floating basins look nice, consider designing a unit with cabinetry so you’ve always got the essentials at arms reach.
