House Rules High Stakes Grand Final: Giving Back Challenge

House Rules High Stakes was a tremendous rating success and Apollo Kitchens was happy to be an official supplier for the Grand Final “Giving Back Challenge”.

The Grand Final challenge saw four teams turn a metal shell into a Zen-inspired nano home masterpiece in just four days following five ‘House Rules’ set by judges Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, Kyly Clarke and Saul Myers, with their score deciding the winner.

The five ‘House Rules’ were:

  1. be house proud and create a Zen inspired retreat
  2. make sure small is perfectly formed
  3. decorate with life’s stylish necessities
  4. be sustainable, natural and neutral
  5. be cheeky with the use of LLB’s wallpaper

The Giving Back Challenge involved a container sized small home renovated for a former truck driver who fell on hard times. The House Rules team delivered a beautiful and peaceful home for Lionel thought with the support of Wentworth Community Housing.

Lionel felt on top of the world with happy tears.  Here is how the full renovation reveal unfolded:

Kitchen

This superbly designed tiny kitchen by Kimmy and Rhi looked amazing with the LLB wallpaper on the kitchen island topped off with Smarstone Carrara Gris.

Judge Saul Myers commented on their kitchen, saying, “This feels like the heart and the hub of the home,” saying it walked the delicate balance between style and functionality.

Soft close hinges, soft close drawers and Belluno Handles by Hettich. With plenty of storage and integrated appliance, this designer kitchen is both comfortable and accommodating.

Lounge

Imagine relaxing after a long week in front of this beautiful natural, Zen lounge space designed by Tamara and Rhys. You can never have enough storage in a nano home and the fantastic Queensland couple utilised the space above, below and to the right of the tv for additional storage. The top cabinets light up towards the ceiling for extra ambience. Tamara and Rhys kept the consistent look and feel in the lounge by selecting Polytec Maison Oak Ravine and Classic White Matt with soft close hinges and soft close drawers by Hettich.

Walk-in Robe

Kayne and Aimee designed this amazing walk-in robe with ample storage for this House Rules Giving Back challenge. Behind the mirror, Lionel will find additional storage to add to space above the cabinets for larger items.

The team fantastically incorporated LLB wallpaper on Polytec Maison Oak Ravine. Achieving a natural, Zen look with energy. Once again utilising Hettich for soft close doors and drawers.

Laundry

Laith and George took on the laundry challenge. They brought excitement to a room that is typically overlooked. With a bi-fold door system and exciting LLB wallpaper, you can feel house proud when doing the laundry.

Cabinets and panels were finished with Polytec’s Maison Oak Ravine and the benchtop selected was Smarstone’s Carrara Gris with 20mm arris edge. Soft close hinges and bi-fold system by Hettich. Notice an additional storage idea for ironing boards and brooms.

Bedroom

Joinery decorates our lifestyle, and it is the small things we do to create a consistent look throughout the home. Working with Kimmy and Rhi, Apollo Kitchens created bed head with bedside tables with Polytec Maison Oak Ravine. Kimmy and Rhi went out of their way to understand what Zen is about and put it into an Australian context.

Conclusion

Kimmy and Rhi scored 9/10 from all three judges for their bedroom and kitchen design.  LLB declared the twins “incredibly good designers,” who went out of their way to understand what Zen is about and put it into an Australian context. LLB said: “This is Australian Zen.” Judge Kyly said: “Kimmy and Rhi, you should both be very proud of yourselves, a magnificent display of your design skills.”
