Surviving During a Kitchen Renovation

When you’re about to embark on a major kitchen renovation, the thought of eating out, or ordering takeaway can be tempting for the first day.

But as time goes on, you get bored and want to save money, you find yourself wishing you could cook your own meals, particularly at breakfast.

And microwaving doesn’t quite cut it.

Read on for our top tips for surviving without a kitchen during your renovation.

Set up a kitchen station in a room where you have the space

Set aside some room in the garage or a living area where you can store all your kitchen essentials like food, everyday items and any appliances you use daily.

Invest in a camp stove or portable hob

Portable induction cooktops and camping stoves are relatively affordable, and will come in handy when it comes to preparing meals during your kitchen renovation

Alternatively, try your hand at slow cooker meals!

Store frequently used items in clear containers

Sort your kitchen items into three categories: everyday use, weekly use, and once-in-a-while use. Where you store something will depend on how frequently you use it.

Keep your daily items like plates, bowls, glasses and cutlery and dry food in clear storage tubs. This makes it easier to find whilst your kitchen is renovated.

Place things you may only use every once in a while in a storage cupboard.

Use your barbecue

Whilst barbecue dinners are not always the most appealing dinner option, you’d be surprised how many recipes you can cook on the grill during your kitchen renovation!

If your barbecue is fitted with a wok burner, you can get plenty of mileage out of it.

Roasting food on the barbecue is another option. Simply prep your vegetables and place in a disposable tin tray, set it on the shelf and close the lid.

Cook and freeze meals before you begin the renovation

While you still have full access to a kitchen, if you have the time, prepare some easy recipes, portion them out and freeze them. Then all you have to do is reheat in the microwave!
