Five Small Projects You Can Do to Kickstart Your Kitchen Project This Weekend

Looking to update your kitchen, but don’t know where to start? Perhaps you’re overwhelmed with an avalanche of options, or have decision fatigue after browsing seemingly endless catalogues.

If this is you, why not start small with some simple projects that take a weekend or less? Once you’ve nailed these projects, you may be in the mood for more – and you may have nipped that overwhelming feeling right in the bud.

Project one: Write your wants down on paper

This project doesn’t require you to pick up tools – all you need is a pen and paper. Even though it’s simple, it’s an essential step before you start renovating, and helps you plan your projects in a more streamlined way.

Think about why you want to renovate your kitchen, and write down your frustrations and potential solutions on a piece of paper. Next to ‘not enough shelf space’, you could write some ways to fix this – adding dividers and baskets, and so on. When you’re done, you’ll be left with a to-do list that will take you through the next few weekends!

Project two: Reorganise your cupboards and drawers

Save time and energy from fishing around drawers for that hard-to-find utensil. This weekend, reorganise your storage spaces, so your most-used items are on top and easy to grab next time you’re cooking. While you’re at it, put items you never get around to using in a big box ready for donation. It’ll clear up space and make it even easier to find what you need later on.

Organised storage spaces will make your kitchen feel brand new.

Project three: Repairing faulty parts

You’re constantly frustrated by the drip-drip-drip of the faucet – but have you ever gotten up to fix it? Now’s your chance, with your weekend set aside for home maintenance tasks. Tackle a few easy items yourself, or schedule appointments with contractors to get electrical wiring and plumbing fixed. Tick these items off your list and your kitchen will be a frustration-free zone from now on.

Project four: A kitchen garden

Remember those herbs languishing at the bottom of the crisper drawer? We thought you didn’t. Avoid food wastage and save on the cost of supermarket herbs by planting your very own kitchen garden. All you need is a sunlit window sill or balcony area, some pots and potting mix, and a trip to the nursery for seedlings, and you’ll be well on your way to on-demand fresh herbs all year round. Start with mint, basil and parsley for the easiest plants to grow, even if you don’t have a green thumb.

Adding a touch of greenery isn’t just practical; a kitchen garden looks great, too.

Project five: Paint, paint, paint

The quickest way to freshen up a drab, forgotten kitchen is with a lick of paint – either on the walls, or the kitchen cabinets. Choose a colour from your local hardware store, clean and prime your surfaces, and get painting. The process from start to finish should only take a couple of hours, and you’ll be left with fresh walls you’ll love to come home to.
